Betrayal of a Best Friend

Prompt - Your best friend puts a gun to your head, what are your final words?

Betrayal of a Best Friend

His hand trembles from an unbearable weight,

Mind wandering on where things went wrong.

He believes this is the only way to solve it all,

His mind tells him that friendship was a lie all along.

He looks straight through me as if I am a ghost,

His face feigns a lack of feeling although I know he hurts.

Breathing heavy he never once looks me in the eye,

His body worried, mind torn, diaphragm struggling and eyes alert.

As I kneel before him my mind has already forgiven it all,

After all he has been my best friend, even if he thinks he is a freak.

I know he is lost in his own head and doesn't really want to do this,

He doesn't want to comes to terms with this so he whispers 'speak.'

He notices my confusion at his strange request,

I had expected him to end it all without any last word.

Alas he waits as only our rushed breaths sound in the wind,

He says more angrily, 'Do it! Speak, I know you heard!'

My eyes fall shut as darkness gives me solace to speak my truth,

'I am sorry that I didn't do better by you, sorry that you feel like a villain.

But as you tower above me and pull that trigger and my blood flows into the Earth,

the ground soaked red, I want you to know one thing: you are forgiven.'
